Powertrain choices comprised 2 petrol versions, the 2.9 L F154 twin-turbocharged V6 and 2.0 L GME T4 Multiair turbocharged and Diesel in the form of the 2.2 L JTDm I4.
All offer great reward when tuned, and handle really well with a few suspension tweaks and upgrades.
We review and look at Giulia tuning and show the ultimate modifications. Alfa Romeo Giulias have loads of potential and with a few sensible performance modifications you can substantially maximise your driving pleasure and just add some more polish to a really good and well put together car.
You can do a lot to improve the performance of your Giulia with our step by step tuning tips. The key to Giulia tuning is doing it right - a lot of money can be wasted if you do it wrong.
Improving the handling for loads of people first priority in your Giulia tuning project. Drop the car by as much as 35mm and fit uprated stiffer dampers, bigger drops will need other modifications in most instances.
Our aim in Giulia engine tuning should be to increase peak power and Torque at the top end.
Smaller engines do not provide much of a return in terms of power so start with a bigger engine. Engine swaps are a good option if you have a small engine size.
Power mods.
These are the modified upgrades are usually carried out by our members, decide how far you want to go before you get going.
Getting the correct grade of uprated modifications for your planned usage of the car is a time and money saver. Stage 3 motor sport parts just won't work well on the road making the car difficult to drive.

How to tune your car
- Improve the handling
Focus on Suspension improvements, such as coilovers and make sure the bushings are in good order and that the alignment is correct. Then focus on improving the brakes, with a big disk brake conversion kit and fast road brake pads.
- Remove restrictions
Focus on the intake and exhaust with filters being the common point of restriction in a tuned car. Intercoolers may also become restrictive on turbo engines so this may also need to be uprated.
- Burn more fuel & air
Increase the fuelling so it matches the air coming into the engine. The ratio is important so you need to improve the fuel pump and injectors, so the head mods, big valve conversions, fast road camshafts and forced induction upgrades extra supply of air is adequately met.
- Test and replace any weak parts
Weak areas are commonly the clutch, the turbocharger and pistons and crankshaft in a highly tuned engine. Makes sure these components will cope with your power aspirations.
- The Tune or Remap
A cars ECU controls the fuel, timing, spark and even the turbo in some cases, so to fully extract your gains you should remap the car last and this will fully release the power. Some cars are easy to map, and others require piggyback ECU's or aftermarket ECU's but this is the most vital step of your tuning project.
Modifying to Stage 1:
Sports exhaust, Suspension upgrade (drop 30-40mm), Remap, Alloy wheels, Lighter flywheel, Panel air filter.
Modifying to Stage 2:
Ported and polished head, Fast road cam, high flow fuel injector, Power/Sport clutch, fuel pump upgrades.
Modifying to Stage 3:
Sports gearbox, Internal engine upgrades (pistons/head/valves), Adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger), Competition cam, Engine balancing.
You should keep as much low end torque as you can and aim for a wide power band rather than a narrow top end power spike.

The intake and exhaust durations play a large part in your cars power band, but be careful here, getting this wrong can upset the idle and make the car difficult to drive in traffic. You'd need to follow a camshaft upgrade with other mods and finish with a remap for the best performance gains.Don't forget to look at the fuelling when you are increasing the power - it makes the car more thirsty.
Using high octane fuel is another option if you find you are suffering from pinking or premature ignition on your Alfa Romeo project after fitting other modified kits. Uprated injectors will enable you to supply sufficient fuel to the engine. Uprate the fuel pump to cope with the extra fuel requirements of your tuned Giulias uprated injectors.
Intake and Exhaust Tuning.
Now we move on to the intake and exhaust and ensure proper flow through the engine. Please note that WE DO NOT RECOMMEND INDUCTION KITS, unless you have tuned your car extensively and are finding that the standard air intake has become a restriction. For most Giulia engines TorqueCars would suggest you just go with a washable panel air filter. On heavily tuned engines and turbo vehicles an induction kit will help release the power providing you address the problem of needing cold air.
Sports exhausts can help equal out the flow of gases through the engine. But if the exhaust is too big, ie: over 2.5 inches bore, you will lose a lot of the exhaust flow rate and end up losing power and torque.
Head work including a polish and port and 3 or 5 angle valve job will really help to release the potential of the engine. In nearly all cases of Giulia tuning your clutch will start to complain and this needs to be uprated - read our overview on clutches for more information. Turbo engines are just crying out to be Reprogrammed. You will see big power gains on most modern turbo charged cars including diesels making a remap one of the most cost effective and big modifications for your money.
We've also seen some tuners playing with twincharged conversions and making some seriously high power hikes.
Alloy wheel upgrades.
Alloy wheels will help the brake cooling and are usually lighter than steel ones. Large Giulia alloy wheels can decrease performance. If you get big alloy wheels you will be changing your final drive ratio.
Because of this aim to keep the overall rolling diameter of the wheel your OEM settings. In all cases not going over 18 inches.
