Tuning the Audi A7

AThe A7 was essentially a fastback version of the A6 much like the VW Passat CC.
It looks stunning and performs really well and had a great choice of well chosen engines.
The A7 is a awesome car modification project to play with. The key to A7 tuning is getting your choice of modification right you can waste loads of money if you do it wrong.
Petrol engines

Handling/Suspension upgrades
Improving the handling for lots of DIY modders first priority in your A7 tuning project.
Fully adjustable suspension allows you to fine tune the handling of you A7 usually benefitting your drive.
We would go to a maximum drop of 22mm - 40 mm. on most models. You risk compromising your handling if you go lower than this.
Turning our attention to the engine we need to get a bit more torque out of the top end.
Engine tuning mods.
These are the uprated modifications are usually installed by our members, decide how far you want to push your car before you start.
Getting the best uprated upgrade kits for your planned usage of the car is vital. Stage 3 motor sport mods just won't work well on the road making the car difficult to drive.
First generation 4G8 2010-2017

How to tune your car
- Improve the handling
Focus on Suspension improvements, such as coilovers and make sure the bushings are in good order and that the alignment is correct. Then focus on improving the brakes, with a big disk brake conversion kit and fast road brake pads.
- Remove restrictions
Focus on the intake and exhaust with filters being the common point of restriction in a tuned car. Intercoolers may also become restrictive on turbo engines so this may also need to be uprated.
- Burn more fuel & air
Increase the fuelling so it matches the air coming into the engine. The ratio is important so you need to improve the fuel pump and injectors, so the head mods, big valve conversions, fast road camshafts and forced induction upgrades extra supply of air is adequately met.
- Test and replace any weak parts
Weak areas are commonly the clutch, the turbocharger and pistons and crankshaft in a highly tuned engine. Makes sure these components will cope with your power aspirations.
- The Tune or Remap
A cars ECU controls the fuel, timing, spark and even the turbo in some cases, so to fully extract your gains you should remap the car last and this will fully release the power. Some cars are easy to map, and others require piggyback ECU's or aftermarket ECU's but this is the most vital step of your tuning project.
Modifying to Stage 1:
Lighter flywheel, Alloy wheels, Sports exhaust, Suspension upgrade (drop 22mm - 40 mm.), Remap, Panel air filter.
Modifying to Stage 2:
Power/Sport clutch, Fast road cam, fuel pump upgrades, high flow fuel injector, Ported and polished head.
Modifying to Stage 3:
Sports gearbox, Engine balancing, Adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger), Competition cam, Internal engine upgrades (pistons/head/valves).
Your aims when tuning should be a flat and wide torque range. You want to avoid sending all the power to be at the top end of the rev range unless you are creating a motor sport car.
The aim of our guides is to give a limited introduction of tuning upgrades and point you in the right direction, our forum is the place to go for detailed advice and tips on your customized car project, the best uprated parts and all aspects of modding cars.Fast road cams offer one of the biggest performance gains for your money as far as a solitary modified mods goes on a NASP engine.
It improves the intake and exhaust durations and pushes up the power if done right. Ideally you'd add other mods and finish up with a reflashed ECU. TorqueCars would caution you not to go with a competition cam as this affects the engines idling and general town driving characteristics.
Don't forget to increase the fuelling when you are increasing the power - it makes the car more thirsty.
Using high octane fuel is another option if you find you are suffering from pinking or premature ignition on your Audi project after fitting other tuning upgrades. To get sufficient fuel you may need to uprate the injectors on your engine.
Uprate the fuel pump to cope with the extra fuel requirements of your tuned A7's uprated injectors.
Intake and Exhaust Tuning.
The next area for modification is the intake and exhaust. Please note that WE DO NOT RECOMMEND INDUCTION KITS, unless you have tuned your car a lot and are finding that the standard air intake has become a limitation.
Derestricting the flow of air into the engine is the primary part of tuning so get a freer flowing air filter if you find that the car is running lean only if you find the car is running lean. Induction kits can sound great but due to the warm air in the engine bay they will not do much to increase power and usually rob you of power on most cars.
Sports exhausts generally help improve air flow through the engine but avoid an exhaust that is too big or you could will reduce the flow rate. Stick to 1.5 to 2.5 inches for best results.
Head porting and polishing the head will allow you to maximise your air/fuel charge. Leave this to a professional though with a proper flow bench and machine tools Your clutch can fail as the power goes up if it starts to slip and the standard clutches are only ever good for power gains of up to 40%. Fit a power clutch to avoid power losses through the transmission. The best mods that we recommend for your A7 are remaps, sports camshafts and induction improvements.
Remaps offer significant power gains on all turbo charged cars.
Alloy wheel upgrades.
The benefits of alloy wheels include a lower unsprung weight and more efficient brake cooling. Don't forget that your choice of rubber greatly affects your cars grip and handling. It is not worth compromising performance with cheap tyres when you can buy directional tread pattern performance tires.The drawback to large alloy wheels on your A7 is that you're altering your effective final drive ratio so this will have a negative effect on acceleration and performance.
Although some people have fitted larger wheels without issues we would restrict ourselves to a 19 inch rim size as the maximum.
