Handling/Suspension upgrades

Handling modifications are often a priority for the Linea.

Adding a tiny bit of negative camber on the fronts and around 1 to 1.7 degrees of toe out, will often improve your Linea in handling and cornering.

We would go to a maximum drop of 27mm - 35 mm on most models. You risk grounding out if you go lower than this.

Turning our attention to the Lineas engine we need to get a bit more power out of the top end.

Linea make good sleepers if you debadge them and fit the most powerful engine mods and handling mods you can !

Sadly with smaller engine sizes you are wasting your time spending money on modifications, so if this applies to you get yourself an engine swap then apply the following mods.

Engine Tuning.

Typically these kits are usually installed by our members, decide how far you want to push your car before you begin.

Getting the right modified modifications for your planned usage of the car is essential. Stage 3 motor sport parts just won't work well on the road difficult in stop start traffic.

How to tune your car

  1. Improve the handling

    Focus on Suspension improvements, such as coilovers and make sure the bushings are in good order and that the alignment is correct. Then focus on improving the brakes, with a big disk brake conversion kit and fast road brake pads.

  2. Remove restrictions

    Focus on the intake and exhaust with filters being the common point of restriction in a tuned car. Intercoolers may also become restrictive on turbo engines so this may also need to be uprated.

  3. Burn more fuel & air

    Increase the fuelling so it matches the air coming into the engine. The ratio is important so you need to improve the fuel pump and injectors, so the head mods, big valve conversions, fast road camshafts and forced induction upgrades extra supply of air is adequately met.

  4. Test and replace any weak parts

    Weak areas are commonly the clutch, the turbocharger and pistons and crankshaft in a highly tuned engine. Makes sure these components will cope with your power aspirations.

  5. The Tune or Remap

    A cars ECU controls the fuel, timing, spark and even the turbo in some cases, so to fully extract your gains you should remap the car last and this will fully release the power. Some cars are easy to map, and others require piggyback ECU's or aftermarket ECU's but this is the most vital step of your tuning project.

Modifying to Stage 1:

 Alloy wheels, Remap, Sports exhaust, Lighter flywheel, Panel air filter, Suspension upgrade (drop 30-40mm).

Modifying to Stage 2:

 Ported and polished head, Fast road cam, high flow fuel injector, Power/Sport clutch, fuel pump upgrades.

Modifying to Stage 3:

 Sports gearbox, Engine balancing, Competition cam, Internal engine upgrades (pistons/head/valves), Adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger).

Peak power is nice in motorsport but for a drivable and fun car you need a wide torque band and perhaps extending the rev range.

The whole aim of our guides is to give a starting base of car tuning upgrades and point you in the right direction, our forum is the place to go for detailed advice and tips on your tuning project, the best uprated modifications and all aspects of modding cars.One of the biggest mechanical tuning upgrades you can do to your NASP engine is to fit a fast road camshaft .

It improves the intake and exhaust durations and increases the power if done right. Ideally you'd add other mods and finish up with a performance chip. TorqueCars would caution you not to go with a competition cam as this affects the engines idling and general town driving characteristics.

Don't forget to uprate the fuelling when you are increasing the power - it makes the car more thirsty.

If you find you get flat spots and power surges after your modified upgrades you should check the fuelling and try a higher octane fuel as well. Increasing the injectors is another beneficial modification and will deliver sufficient fuel.

If you've uprated your fuelling with bigger injectors you will also need to get a bigger fuel pump to supply it.

Intake and Exhaust Tuning.

Now we move on to the intake and exhaust and ensure proper flow through the engine. Induction kits only help to increase power if the air intake is restricted! Adding an induction kit to most standard engines will see NO POWER GAIN AT ALL. If you have heavily modified your engine and it's need for air INCREASES DRAMATICALLY then an induction kit is the answer and will help remove this restriction.

For most Linea engines TorqueCars would suggest you just go with a washable panel air filter. On heavily tuned engines and turbo vehicles an induction kit will help release the power providing you address the problem of supplying cold air.

Sports exhausts equal out the flow of air through the engine. But if your exhaust pipe is too large, ie: it's over 2.5 inches bore, you will lose much of your flow rate and end up losing power and torque.

Head work including a head port and polished and 3 or 5 angle valve job will really help to release the potential of the engine. In nearly all cases of Linea tuning your clutch will start to complain and this needs an upgrade - read our guide on clutches for more information. The best mods in our opinion for your Linea are fast road camshaft, remap, induction and exhaust, suspensionNASP engines do not achieve big power gains if you remap them, unless you have done extensive modifications. With turbocharged engines this is another story. A remapped turbo will give large power gains and fully release the potential power of the engine.

We've also come across some owners toying with twincharging conversions and making some very high power hikes.

The most phenomenal power gains for NASP engines usually involve the addition of forced induction. Superchargers are usually easier to add than a turbo. Turbos increase power in exponential proportion to rising engine speed and this can make mapping difficult.

Superchargers, however will give a boost which is directly proportional to engine speed so is simpler. Alternatively you could perhaps install water injection to control knock.

Alloy wheel upgrades.

Alloy wheels can help the brakes cool down and are generally lighter than steel ones. Pay attention to your choice of tyres (tires) for your car, a good directional tread pattern tire can really enhance your cars handling. The drawback to large alloys on your Linea is that you alter your effective final drive ratio and this will have a negative effect on acceleration and performance.

Due to this fact endeavour to keep the overall rolling diameter of the wheel the same as supplied from the factory. In all cases without going over 16 inches.
