The MG6 is a great project car to fill your spare time. The key to MG6 tuning is getting the right mods you can waste loads of money if you do it wrong.
Herein we detail the best approach to MG6 tuning and report on the best upgrades. MG MG6 have loads of potential and with carefully chosen tuning parts like remaps, turbo kits and camshafts you will positively maximize your driving enjoyment.
Handling/Suspension upgrades
Improving the handling for people often first priority in your MG6 tuning project.
Setting slight negative camber at the front and a degree or two of toe in to improve stability or toe out for better cornering, will radically benefit your MG6 in handling and cornering.
Drop the car by as much as 24mm - 35 mm. and fit modified stiffer dampers, bigger drops will need other modifications in most instances.
Our aim in engine tuning should be to increase peak power and torque at the top end.
The best power gains come from larger engine sizes. The more you start with the bigger the return on investment so engine swaps are good value mods for small engined cars.
Power mods.
Typically these upgrades are usually installed by our members, decide how far you want to push your car before you get started.
Getting the best modified parts for your planned usage of the car is vital. Stage 3 (competition) mods just won't work well on the road hard to control in slow traffic.

How to tune your car
- Improve the handling
Focus on Suspension improvements, such as coilovers and make sure the bushings are in good order and that the alignment is correct. Then focus on improving the brakes, with a big disk brake conversion kit and fast road brake pads.
- Remove restrictions
Focus on the intake and exhaust with filters being the common point of restriction in a tuned car. Intercoolers may also become restrictive on turbo engines so this may also need to be uprated.
- Burn more fuel & air
Increase the fuelling so it matches the air coming into the engine. The ratio is important so you need to improve the fuel pump and injectors, so the head mods, big valve conversions, fast road camshafts and forced induction upgrades extra supply of air is adequately met.
- Test and replace any weak parts
Weak areas are commonly the clutch, the turbocharger and pistons and crankshaft in a highly tuned engine. Makes sure these components will cope with your power aspirations.
- The Tune or Remap
A cars ECU controls the fuel, timing, spark and even the turbo in some cases, so to fully extract your gains you should remap the car last and this will fully release the power. Some cars are easy to map, and others require piggyback ECU's or aftermarket ECU's but this is the most vital step of your tuning project.
Modifying to Stage 1:
Lighter flywheel, Remap, Panel air filter, Sports exhaust, Suspension upgrade (drop 24mm - 35 mm.), Alloy wheels.
Modifying to Stage 2:
Fast road cam, fuel pump upgrades, Ported and polished head, Power/Sport clutch, high flow fuel injector.
Modifying to Stage 3:
Competition cam, Sports gearbox, Adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger), Internal engine upgrades (pistons/head/valves), Engine balancing.
You really need to keep as much low end power as possible and aim for a wide power band across the rev range rather than a narrow top end power spike.

The intake and exhaust flow play a huge role in your cars power band, but be careful here, getting this wrong can upset the idle and make the car challenging to drive in traffic. You'd need to follow a camshaft upgrade with other mods and finish with a reflashed ECU for the best performance gains.
Don't forget to uprate the fuelling when you are increasing the power - it makes the car more thirsty.
Most power losses, flat spots and erratic idling after performance upgrades are done can usually be traced to fuelling or timing issues. To get sufficient fuel you may need to improve the injectors on your engine.
Uprate the fuel pump to cope with the extra fuel requirements of your tuned MG6's uprated injectors.
Intake and Exhaust Tuning.
The next area for modification is the intake and exhaust. Please note that WE DO NOT FEEL YOU GET POWER GAINS FROM INDUCTION KITS, unless you have tuned your car massively and are finding that the standard air intake has become a limitation.
Maximum power gains come from a full induction kit with a cold air feed on heavily tuned engines, this can be sited within an air box but a panel filter should suffice for most applications. TorqueCars suggest you use a panel air filter as these are easy to clean and maintain and generally perform better than paper ones.
Sports exhausts will certainly help air flow through the engine but do not go too large or you may end up will reduce the flow rate. Stick to 1.5 to 2.5 inches as a rule of thumb.
Getting the cylinder head gas flowed will help get more air into each cylinder. This is definitely a job for a pro with a flow bench. In nearly all cases of MG6 tuning your clutch will start to fail and this needs to be uprated - read our tips on clutches for more information. The best mods we would do for your MG6 are fast road camshaft, remap, induction and exhaust, suspension.
Turbo engines are just crying out to be Upgraded. You will see big power gains on most modern turbo charged cars including diesels making a remap one of the most cost effective and big modifications for your money.The most significant power gains for NASP engines usually involve the addition of forced induction. Turbos are generally harder to add than a supercharger. It is difficult to map fuelling with a turbo as the boost comes on exponentially with rpm.
The nice proportional boost and rpm characteristics of the supercharger make them easier to map. Decreasing the engines compression ratio will allow you to add forced induction, water injection may also help prevent detonation.
Alloy wheel upgrades.
Because alloys are lighter they improve performance and they help to cool the brake disks. Get a good soft compound tire to improve your handling and help improve traction on your MG6. The drawback to large alloy wheels on your MG6 is that you alter your final drive ratio and this will have a negative effect on performance and acceleration.
Due to this fact aim to keep the overall rolling diameter of the wheel your OEM settings. In all cases not going above 18 inches.
