Peugeot 607 Tuning

"Thank you for reading my Peugeot 607 tuning guide."

Aimed at the executive, luxury market the 607 wa produced between 1999 and 2011 replacing the 605.

The handling is not up to Peugeots standards, but works fine on long motorway runs, where comfort is a priority, and this is an area we will address in this tuning guide.

The 607 is a good project car to try. We see DIY mechanics wasting money on their 607 doing the wrong mods and then having to start over. Follow our articles to avoid ruining your car

Handling/Suspension upgrades

Improving the handling for people first priority in your 607 tuning project.

If you set the toe out to 0.9 to 1.5 degrees on the front, and add a little negative camber then cornering will dramatically be enhanced.

We would go to a maximum drop of 30mm - 38 mm on most models. You risk grounding out if you go lower than this.

Choose adjustable coilovers, and fit stiffer springs with a slight drop. A front strut brace and rear anti roll bar will finish off the handling improvements, but for many the improvement you'll get for the cost involved is not worth it.

However if you are replacing worn or broken parts it makes a lot of sense to invest in better parts.

Now you've made the car handle better, it's time to fit some larger brakes, whilst you don't need 6 pot calipers a larger disk size, with vents and grooves can dramatically improve stopping.

Ignore the track spec brake pads, these need to be pretty hot to work effectively making them useless for the road but there are many performance pads around that work well for street use.

Power mods.

Turning our attention to the 607's engine we need to get a bit more power out of the top end.

With performance tips you can convert your 607 into a fun car, potentially beating larger cars on the track.

The best power gains come from higher power engines, think of getting a percentage increase for your money so the more you start with the bigger the return on investment. An engine swap is a good value mods for those stuck with lower powered engines and limited part availability.

All the turbo engines are a dream to tune, and we really love the V6 engines, smooth and silky running and oodles of torque.

All diesel engines can be remapped for around 30% power hike, which is not insignificant considering the cost of a remap is around £300.

There were many engine options on the 607,

  • 2.0 16v (1997 cm3 EW10) 138 HP 140 lb-ft @ 4100 RPM
  • 2.2 litre (2230 cc) EW12160 PS 158 hp 160 lbf⋅ft
  • 2.9 litre (2946 cc) "3.0" ES9 V6, 211 PS 208 hp 218 lbf⋅ft
  • 3.0 V6 4AT 210HP @6000rpm 210 lb-ft @ 3750 RPM
  • 3.0 V6 5MT 210hp @6000rpm 210 lb-ft @ 3750 RPM
  • 2.0 litre (1997 cc) DW10 HDi Diesel 108 hp 160 lbf⋅ft–188 lbf⋅ft
  • 2.2 litre (2179 cc) DW12 HDi Diesel 134 hp 235 lbf⋅ft
  • 2.2 litre (2179 cc) DW12 HDi Diesel 168 hp 272 lbf⋅ft
  • 2.7 litre (2720 cc) HDi Diesel V6, 201 hp) 325 lbf⋅ft

Getting the correct grade of tuning mods for your planned usage of the car is a time and money saver. Stage 3 motor sport parts just don't work well on the road making the car difficult to drive.

How to tune your car

  1. Improve the handling

Focus on Suspension improvements, such as coilovers and make sure the bushings are in good order and that the alignment is correct. Then focus on improving the brakes, with a big disk brake conversion kit and fast road brake pads.

  2. Remove restrictions

Focus on the intake and exhaust with filters being the common point of restriction in a tuned car. Intercoolers may also become restrictive on turbo engines so this may also need to be uprated.

  3. Burn more fuel & air

Increase the fuelling so it matches the air coming into the engine. The ratio is important so you need to improve the fuel pump and injectors, so the head mods, big valve conversions, fast road camshafts and forced induction upgrades extra supply of air is adequately met.

  4. Test and replace any weak parts

Weak areas are commonly the clutch, the turbocharger and pistons and crankshaft in a highly tuned engine. Makes sure these components will cope with your power aspirations.

  5. The Tune or Remap

A cars ECU controls the fuel, timing, spark and even the turbo in some cases, so to fully extract your gains you should remap the car last and this will fully release the power. Some cars are easy to map, and others require piggyback ECU's or aftermarket ECU's but this is the most vital step of your tuning project.

Modifying to Stage 1:

Sports exhaust, Remap, Panel air filter, Lighter flywheel, Alloy wheels, Suspension upgrade (drop 30-40mm).

Modifying to Stage 2:

fuel pump upgrades, Fast road cam, Ported and polished head, Power/Sport clutch, high flow fuel injector.

Modifying to Stage 3:

Sports gearbox, Adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger), Engine balancing, Internal engine upgrades (pistons/head/valves), Competition cam.

Peak power is all well and good but for a drivable and fun car you need a wide power band and perhaps extending the rev range.

In this article we shall give a brief overview to the best upgrades for your car, but we'd encourage you to spend some time on the site looking into the details of each type of performance upgrade.Fast road cams offer one of the biggest power gains for your money as far as a single motorsport parts goes on a NASP engine.

The intake & exhaust flow play a large part in your cars power band, but be careful here, getting this wrong can upset the idle and make the car impossible to drive in traffic. You'd need to follow a camshaft upgrade with other mods and finish with a remap for the best performance gains.

Don't forget to uprate the fuelling when you are increasing the power - it makes the car more thirsty.

Frequently power losses, flat spots and erratic idling after uprated mods are done can usually be traced to timing or fuel delivery issues. To get sufficient fuel you may need to uprate the injectors on your engine.

Uprate the fuel pump to cope with the extra fuel requirements of your tuned 607s uprated injectors.

Intake and Exhaust Tuning.

Breathing mods are usually next up. Contrary to popular belief there is generally a small if any power gain obtained by fitting an induction kit, they only help and are recommended after you increase the engines power to the point where the standard air intake box cannot cope!

Induction kits can work well on turbo engines and larger engines (if supplied with a suitable cold air feed or air box), generally though we'd just recommend for 607 engines you should go with a high performance panel air filter preferably made from cotton.

Do not go with the largest exhaust you can buy this will reduce the exhaust flow rate - the best for power gains are usually between 1.5 to 2.5 inches. It is the shape and material more than the bore size.

Getting a professionally polished and ported head with larger valves can fully release the engines power. When you heavily modify your 607 you will reach a point that the standard clutch starts to fail so get an uprated clutch. The best mods in our experience for your 607 are a remap especially on a turbo, a fast road camshaft and sports exhaust, with a good air intakeNASP engines do not achieve big power gains if you remap them, unless you have done extensive modifications. With turbocharged engines this is another story. A remapped turbo will give big power gains and take full advantage of the strength of the block. Despite the large cost involved adding forced induction to a NASP engine will give large power gains. Superchargers are often easier to add than a turbo. With a turbo the power curve is related exponentially to the engine speed making it more challenging to map.

Superchargers will give a boost which is correlating to engine speed so is simpler. Alternatively you could perhaps add water injection to control knock.

Alloy wheel upgrades.

Alloy wheels can help the brake cooling and are usually less heavy than the steel ones. Further improvements can be made to your cars handling with the addition of track legal slick tire. Please note that although they can look cool on the 607 large alloys will actually decrease your performance. The larger you go the lower your acceleration will be - this to the change in your effective final drive ratio.

Although some people have fitted larger wheels we would stick to a 16 inch rim size as the maximum.
