Handling/Suspension upgrades

Handling modifications are the thing most do first for the Satria.

Fully adjustable suspension allows you to fine tune the handling of you Satria often improving your drive.

We suggest that you fit sports suspension and lower the car by 23mm - 42 mm. Larger drops require arch work - especially on models already equipped with uprated suspension.

Our aim in Satria engine tuning should be to increase peak power and Torque at the top end.

With the right choice of mods you can turn your Satria into a hot hatch, potentially beating bigger engined cars on the track.

Smaller engines do not provide much of a return in terms of power so start with a bigger engine. Engine swaps are a good option if you have a small engine size.

Power mods.

This list of the stages and sports modifications are usually carried out by our members, decide how far you wish to go in your tuning project before you begin.

Getting the best sports upgrade kits for your planned usage of the car is vital. Stage 3 motor sport mods just won't work well on the road making the car difficult to drive.

How to tune your car

  1. Improve the handling

    Focus on Suspension improvements, such as coilovers and make sure the bushings are in good order and that the alignment is correct. Then focus on improving the brakes, with a big disk brake conversion kit and fast road brake pads.

  2. Remove restrictions

    Focus on the intake and exhaust with filters being the common point of restriction in a tuned car. Intercoolers may also become restrictive on turbo engines so this may also need to be uprated.

  3. Burn more fuel & air

    Increase the fuelling so it matches the air coming into the engine. The ratio is important so you need to improve the fuel pump and injectors, so the head mods, big valve conversions, fast road camshafts and forced induction upgrades extra supply of air is adequately met.

  4. Test and replace any weak parts

    Weak areas are commonly the clutch, the turbocharger and pistons and crankshaft in a highly tuned engine. Makes sure these components will cope with your power aspirations.

  5. The Tune or Remap

    A cars ECU controls the fuel, timing, spark and even the turbo in some cases, so to fully extract your gains you should remap the car last and this will fully release the power. Some cars are easy to map, and others require piggyback ECU's or aftermarket ECU's but this is the most vital step of your tuning project.

Modifying to Stage 1:

 Remap, Panel air filter, Alloy wheels, Suspension upgrade (drop 23mm - 42 mm.), Lighter flywheel, Sports exhaust.

Modifying to Stage 2:

 high flow fuel injector, Fast road cam, Ported and polished head, Power/Sport clutch, fuel pump upgrades.

Modifying to Stage 3:

 Engine balancing, Sports gearbox, Internal engine upgrades (pistons/head/valves), Competition cam, Adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger).

Your aims when modding the engine should be a wide torque output. You don't want all the power to be at the top end unless you are creating a competition car.

The whole aim of our tips is to give a brief overview of tuning modifications and point you in the right direction, our forum is where you can ask for more detailed advice and tips on your tuning project, the best sport upgrades and all aspects of modding cars.Fast road cams offer one of the biggest torque gains for your money as far as a bolt on uprated mods goes on a NASP engine.

It improves the intake and exhaust durations and pushes up the power if done right. Ideally you'd add other mods and finish up with a remap. TorqueCars would caution you not to go with a motor sport cam as this upsets the engines idling and general town driving characteristics.

Don't forget to uprate the fuelling when you are increasing the power - it makes the car more thirsty.

Using higher octane fuel is another option if you find you are suffering from pinking or premature ignition on your Proton project after fitting other tuning parts. Uprating the injectors is another beneficial modification and will deliver sufficient fuel.

If have increased your fuelling with bigger injectors you will also need to get a bigger fuel pump to supply it.

Intake and Exhaust Tuning.

Now we move on to the intake and exhaust and ensure proper flow through the engine. Contrary to popular belief there is often a small power gain achieved by fitting an induction kit, they only work well and are recommended after you boost the engines power to the point where the standard air intake box cannot cope!

Derestricting the airflow into the engine is the primary part of performance tuning so get a better flowing air filter if you find that the car is running lean only if you find the car is running lean. Induction kits can sound sporty but due to the warm air in the engine bay they will not really increase power and often rob you of power.

Sports exhausts can usually air flow through the engine but avoid an exhaust that is too wide or you could will reduce the flow rate. Stick to 1.5 to 2.5 inches as a rule of thumb.

Head work including a gas flow and 3 or 5 angle valve job will really help to release the potential of the engine. Your clutch can lose you loads of power as the power goes up if it starts to suffer and the standard clutches are only ever good for power gains of up to 40%. Fit a power clutch to avoid power leak through the transmission. The best mods that we recommend for your Satria are remaps, sports camshafts and induction improvements.

NASP engines do not achieve big power gains if you remap them, unless you have done extensive modifications. With turbocharged engines this is another story. A remapped turbo will give phenomenal power gains and take full advantage of the strength of the block.

We've also come across some owners toying with twin charging applications and making some seriously high power gains.

Adding forced induction will see massive power gains but this is usually too expensive to be cost effective. It is often cheaper to bolt on a supercharger than it is to bolt on a turbo. Turbos increase power in increasing proportion to rising engine speed and this can make mapping difficult.

Superchargers, however will give a boost which is directly proportional to engine speed so is simpler. Adding forced induction will often require a lower compression ratio or water injection.

Alloy wheel upgrades.

Because alloy wheels are less heavy they improve performance and they can help to cool the brake disks. Pay attention to your choice of tyres (tires) for your car, a good soft compound tire can really enhance your cars handling. Large Satria alloy wheels can decrease performance. If you get big alloy wheels you will be changing your final drive ratio.

Although some people have installed larger rims we would restrict ourselves to a 16 inch rim size as the maximum.
