Handling/Suspension upgrades

Improving the handling for lots of DIY modders first priority in your Wira tuning project.

Putting some negative camber at the front and a degree or two of toe in to improve stability or toe out for better cornering, will radically enhance your Wira in handling and cornering.

We would go to a maximum drop of 28mm - 44 mm. on most models. You risk grounding out if you go lower than this.

A nice wide torque band and sweet spot of peak power at one third of your RPM range is optimum.

Following our guidance for tuning your Wira you will make a practical but scorching car that will potentially out perform bigger cars.

Smaller engines do not provide much of a return in terms of power so start with a bigger engine. Engine swaps are a good option if you have a small engine size.

Engine Tuning.

These mods performance mods are usually installed by our members, decide how far you want to go before you get started.

Getting the correct grade of sports upgrade kits for your planned usage of the car is vital. Stage 3 competition upgrades just won't work well on the road difficult in stop start traffic.

How to tune your car

  1. Improve the handling

    Focus on Suspension improvements, such as coilovers and make sure the bushings are in good order and that the alignment is correct. Then focus on improving the brakes, with a big disk brake conversion kit and fast road brake pads.

  2. Remove restrictions

    Focus on the intake and exhaust with filters being the common point of restriction in a tuned car. Intercoolers may also become restrictive on turbo engines so this may also need to be uprated.

  3. Burn more fuel & air

    Increase the fuelling so it matches the air coming into the engine. The ratio is important so you need to improve the fuel pump and injectors, so the head mods, big valve conversions, fast road camshafts and forced induction upgrades extra supply of air is adequately met.

  4. Test and replace any weak parts

    Weak areas are commonly the clutch, the turbocharger and pistons and crankshaft in a highly tuned engine. Makes sure these components will cope with your power aspirations.

  5. The Tune or Remap

    A cars ECU controls the fuel, timing, spark and even the turbo in some cases, so to fully extract your gains you should remap the car last and this will fully release the power. Some cars are easy to map, and others require piggyback ECU's or aftermarket ECU's but this is the most vital step of your tuning project.

Modifying to Stage 1:

 Suspension upgrade (drop 28mm - 44 mm.), Alloy wheels, Panel air filter, Sports exhaust, Remap, Lighter flywheel.

Modifying to Stage 2:

 Ported and polished head, Fast road cam, fuel pump upgrades, high flow fuel injector, Power/Sport clutch.

Modifying to Stage 3:

 Internal engine upgrades (pistons/head/valves), Sports gearbox, Engine balancing, Adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger), Competition cam.

Peak power is good on competition cars but for a drivable and fun car you need a wide torque band and perhaps extending the rev range.

In this article we shall give your a good starting base to the best modifications for your car, but we'd encourage you to spend some time on the site looking into the details of each type of performance mod.Fast road cams offer one of the biggest torque gains for your money as far as a single tuning modifications goes on a NASP engine.

The intake and exhaust durations play a large part in your cars power band, but be careful here, getting this wrong can upset the idle and make the car awkward to drive in traffic. You'd need to follow a camshaft upgrade with other mods and finish with a performance chip to fully release the power gain.

You will need to ensure that the engine is not starved of fuel so will need to look at the fuelling.

Using higher octane petrol is another option if you find you are suffering from detonation or premature ignition on your Proton project after fitting other performance modifications. To get sufficient fuel you may need to upgrade the injectors on your engine.

A fuel pump will only deliver a finite amount of fuel, so you may need to uprate this if your injectors are demanding more fuel.

Intake and Exhaust Tuning.

Now we move on to the intake and exhaust and ensure proper flow through the engine. Contrary to popular belief there is generally very little if any power gain obtained by fitting an induction kit, they only work well and are recommended after you boost the engines power to the point where the standard air intake box cannot cope!

Maximum power gains come from a full induction kit with a cold air feed on heavily tuned engines, this can be sited within an air box but a panel filter should suffice for most applications. TorqueCars suggest you use a panel air filter as these are easy to clean and maintain and generally perform better than paper ones.

Sports exhausts generally help improve air flow through the engine but do not go too large or you may end up will reduce the flow rate. Stick to 1.5 to 2.5 inches as a rule of thumb.

Airflow through the head can be dramatically increased with some professional flowed (porting and polishing). These should match and be setup to take into account any other engine mods. A good heavy duty fast road performance clutch will help to keep that power going where it should. Never cut corners or assume a standard OEM clutch to cope. The best mods in our opinion for your Wira are Remapping or piggy back ecu, fast road cam and air intake and exhaust.

Turbo engines are just asking to be remapped. You will see impressive power gains on most modern turbo engined cars including diesels making a remap one of the most cost effective and impressive modifications for your money.The most significant power gains for NASP engines usually involve the addition of forced induction. It is generally easier to bolt on a supercharger than it is to install a turbo. With a turbo the boost curve is related exponentially to the engine speed making it difficult to map fuelling with.

Superchargers will give a boost which is proportional to engine speed so is simpler. Decreasing the engines compression ratio will allow you to add forced induction, water injection may also help prevent detonation.

Alloy wheel upgrades.

The benefits of alloy wheels include reducing your unsprung weight and more efficient brake cooling via the extra air flow they allow. Pay attention to your choice of tyres (tires) for your car, a good directional tread pattern tire can really enhance your cars handling. The drawback to large alloys on your Wira is that you're altering your final drive ratio so this will have a detrimental effect on acceleration and performance.

For this reason aim to keep the overall rolling diameter of the wheel the OEM setup. In all cases avoid going larger than 16 inches.
