We have seen some awesome Korando tuning projects and there seems to be quite a loyal fan base of Korando owners. If you do your planning then you can create an awesome Korando but don't be fooled there are lots of sports upgrades out there that will simply not suit it read our unbiased guides first.

Handling/Suspension upgrades

Handling modifications are top of many to do lists for the Korando.

Good suspension tweaks that radically benefit handling for the Korando include a couple of degrees negative camber and 1-1.5 degrees of toe out on the front wheels.

We would go to a maximum drop of 22mm - 37 mm on most models. You risk rubbing on the arches if you go lower than this.

A nice wide torque band and sweet spot of peak power at one third of your RPM range is optimum.

With just a few mods you can change your Korando into a hot hatch, beating more powerful cars on the track.

Sadly with smaller engine sizes you are wasting your time spending money on modifications, so if this applies to you get yourself an engine swap then apply the following mods.

Engine Tuning.

These mods modifications are usually carried out by our members, decide how far you want to go before you begin.

Getting the correct grade of tuning parts for your planned usage of the car is a time and money saver. Stage 3 motor sport parts just won't work well on the road making the car difficult to drive.

How to tune your car

  1. Improve the handling

    Focus on Suspension improvements, such as coilovers and make sure the bushings are in good order and that the alignment is correct. Then focus on improving the brakes, with a big disk brake conversion kit and fast road brake pads.

  2. Remove restrictions

    Focus on the intake and exhaust with filters being the common point of restriction in a tuned car. Intercoolers may also become restrictive on turbo engines so this may also need to be uprated.

  3. Burn more fuel & air

    Increase the fuelling so it matches the air coming into the engine. The ratio is important so you need to improve the fuel pump and injectors, so the head mods, big valve conversions, fast road camshafts and forced induction upgrades extra supply of air is adequately met.

  4. Test and replace any weak parts

    Weak areas are commonly the clutch, the turbocharger and pistons and crankshaft in a highly tuned engine. Makes sure these components will cope with your power aspirations.

  5. The Tune or Remap

    A cars ECU controls the fuel, timing, spark and even the turbo in some cases, so to fully extract your gains you should remap the car last and this will fully release the power. Some cars are easy to map, and others require piggyback ECU's or aftermarket ECU's but this is the most vital step of your tuning project.

Modifying to Stage 1:

 Remap, Alloy wheels, Panel air filter, Lighter flywheel, Suspension upgrade (drop 30-40mm), Sports exhaust.

Modifying to Stage 2:

 high flow fuel injector, Fast road cam, Power/Sport clutch, fuel pump upgrades, Ported and polished head.

Modifying to Stage 3:

 Adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger), Internal engine upgrades (pistons/head/valves), Sports gearbox, Competition cam, Engine balancing.

Peak power is good on competition cars but for a daily driven car you need a wide torque band and perhaps extending the rev range.

The whole point of our pointers is to give a starting base of customizing modifications and point you in the right direction, our forum is where you can ask for more detailed advice and tips on your customized car project, the best uprated parts and all aspects of modding cars.A fast road camshaft typically is one of the best NASP power mods you can do mechanically to your engine.

The exhaust & intake flow play a large part in your cars power band, but be careful here, getting this wrong can upset the idle and make the car hard to drive in traffic. You'd need to follow a cam upgrade with other mods and finish with a performance chip to fully release the power gain.

When pushing up the power you will need to pay attention to to the fuelling. More power needs more fuel.

Using higher octane petrol is another option if you find you are suffering from detonation or premature ignition on your Ssangyong project after fitting other mods. Improving the injectors is another beneficial modification and will deliver sufficient fuel.

A fuel pump will only deliver a finite amount of fuel, so you may need to uprate this if your injectors are demanding more fuel.

Intake and Exhaust Tuning.

The next area for modification is the intake and exhaust. Contrary to popular belief there is generally very little power gain reached by fitting an induction kit, they only become beneficial and are recommended after you boos the engines power to the point where the standard air intake box cannot cope!

Induction kits can work well on turbo engines and larger engines (if supplied with a suitable cold air feed or air box), generally though we'd just recommend for Korando engines you should go with a performance panel air filter preferably made from cotton.

Sports exhausts equal out the flow of air through the engine. But if your exhaust is too large, ie: it's over 2.5 inches bore, you will lose a lot of your flow rate and end up losing power and torque.

flowed (porting and polishing) the head will allow you to maximise your air/fuel charge. Leave this to a professional though with a proper flow bench and machine tools A good triple plate fast road sports clutch will help to keep that power going where it should. Never skimp or ask your standard clutch to cope. The best mods we recommend for your Korando are remaps, sports camshafts and induction improvementsTurbo engines are just begging to be Reprogrammed. You will see large power gains on most modern turbo engined cars including diesels making a remap one of the most cost effective and large modifications for your money.

We've also come across some owners playing with twincharging applications and making some impressively high power hikes.

The most impressive power gains for NASP engines usually involve the addition of forced induction. Turbos are generally harder to add than a supercharger. With a turbo the boost curve is related exponentially to the engine speed making it difficult to map fuelling with.

It is easier to map a supercharger because the boost is proportional to engine speed on a linear curve. Decreasing the engines compression ratio will allow you to add forced induction, water injection may also help prevent detonation.

Alloy wheel upgrades.

As alloys are less heavy they improve performance and they help to cool the brake disks. Pay attention to your choice of tyres (tires) for your car, a good directional tread pattern tire can really enhance your cars handling. It is worth noting that although they can look cool on the Korando large alloys will actually decrease your performance. The larger you go the lower your acceleration will be - this to the change in your effective final drive ratio.

For this reason try to keep the overall rolling diameter of the wheel the OEM setup. In all cases not going over 16 inches.
