The Rexton is a good tuning project to have. The key to Rexton tuning is getting your choice of modification right - a lot of money can be wasted if you do it wrong.

Handling/Suspension upgrades

Many Rexton owners uprate the handling of their cars with uprated suspension upgrades as a priority, this will certainly increase your enjoyment of the car. The standard suspension setup, although practical leaves room for improvement.

We found that most Rexton factory suspension setups need tweaking, a few degrees of toe out (1 to 2) and a bit of negative camber will radically benefit your cornering and handling.

We suggest that you fit modified suspension and lower the car by 28mm - 39 mm. Larger drops require arch work - especially on models already equipped with motorsport suspension.

Don't just look at the peak power figures, you need to see the whole torque curve when determining if a mod is right for you Rexton.

With our tips your Rexton can become an awesome performer and prove to be reliable daily driver.

The best power gains come from larger engine sizes. The more you start with the bigger the return on investment so engine swaps are good value mods for small engined cars.

Tuning modifications.

The following sports upgrades are usually carried out by our members, decide how far you want to push your car before you get started.

Getting the best motorsport modifications for your planned usage of the car is vital. Stage 3 motor sport mods just don't work well on the road making the car difficult to drive.

How to tune your car

  1. Improve the handling

    Focus on Suspension improvements, such as coilovers and make sure the bushings are in good order and that the alignment is correct. Then focus on improving the brakes, with a big disk brake conversion kit and fast road brake pads.

  2. Remove restrictions

    Focus on the intake and exhaust with filters being the common point of restriction in a tuned car. Intercoolers may also become restrictive on turbo engines so this may also need to be uprated.

  3. Burn more fuel & air

    Increase the fuelling so it matches the air coming into the engine. The ratio is important so you need to improve the fuel pump and injectors, so the head mods, big valve conversions, fast road camshafts and forced induction upgrades extra supply of air is adequately met.

  4. Test and replace any weak parts

    Weak areas are commonly the clutch, the turbocharger and pistons and crankshaft in a highly tuned engine. Makes sure these components will cope with your power aspirations.

  5. The Tune or Remap

    A cars ECU controls the fuel, timing, spark and even the turbo in some cases, so to fully extract your gains you should remap the car last and this will fully release the power. Some cars are easy to map, and others require piggyback ECU's or aftermarket ECU's but this is the most vital step of your tuning project.

Modifying to Stage 1:

 Panel air filter, Remap, Lighter flywheel, Alloy wheels, Suspension upgrade (drop 28-39mm), Sports exhaust.

Modifying to Stage 2:

 high flow fuel injector, Power/Sport clutch, Ported and polished head, fuel pump upgrades, Fast road cam.

Modifying to Stage 3:

 Sports gearbox, Competition cam, Engine balancing, Internal engine upgrades (pistons/head/valves), Adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger).

Your aims when modding the engine should be a wide torque band. You don't want all the torque to be at the top end of the rev range unless you are creating a competition car.

The aim of our pointers is to give a limited introduction of modifying modifications and point you in the right direction, our forum is the place to go for detailed advice and tips on your car tuning project, the best uprated modifications and all aspects of modding cars.One of the biggest mechanical upgrades you can do on your NASP engine is to fit a fast road camshaft .

The intake & exhaust durations play a large part in your cars power band, but be careful here, getting this wrong can upset the idle and make the car impossible to drive in traffic. You'd need to follow a cam upgrade with other mods and finish with a remap to fully realise your gains.

Don't forget to uprate the fuelling when you are increasing the power - it makes the car more thirsty.

Frequently power losses, flat spots and erratic idling after motorsport upgrades are done can usually be traced to timing or fuelling issues.To get sufficient fuel you may need to upgrade the injectors on your engine.

If you've uprated your fuelling with bigger injectors you will also need to get a bigger fuel pump to supply it.

Intake and Exhaust Tuning.

Breathing mods are usually next up. Please note that WE DO NOT SEE IMPROVEMENTS WITH INDUCTION KITS, unless you have tuned your car a lot and are finding that the standard air intake has become limited.

For most Rexton engines TorqueCars would suggest you just go with a washable panel air filter. On heavily tuned engines and turbo vehicles an induction kit will help release the power providing you address the problem of supplying cold air.

Sports exhausts will certainly help air flow out of the engine but do not go too big or you may end up will reduce the flow rate. Stick to 1.5 to 2.5 inches for best results.

Head work including a polish and port and 3 or 5 angle valve job will really help to release the potential of the engine. When you start tuning your Rexton you will often find that the standard clutch starts to slip so get an uprated clutch. The best mods we recommend for your Rexton are fast road camshaft, remap, induction and exhaust, suspensionNASP engines do not achieve big power gains if you remap them, unless you have done extensive modifications. With turbocharged engines this is another story. A remapped turbo will give impressive power gains and fully release the potential power of the engine. The most impressive power gains for NASP engines usually involve the addition of forced induction. It is usually cheaper to bolt on a supercharger than it is to bolt on a turbo. It is difficult to map fuelling with a turbo as the boost comes on exponentially with rpm.

The nice directly proportional boost and rpm characteristics of the supercharger make them easier to map. Adding forced induction will often require a lower compression ratio or water injection.

Alloy wheel upgrades.

The benefits of alloy wheels include lowering your unsprung weight and more efficient brake cooling via the extra air flow they allow. If you are serious about performance then you will need to carefully choose your tires - ideally with a directional tread pattern tire. We'd like to point out although they can look cool on the Rexton large alloys will actually decrease your performance. The larger you go the lower your acceleration will be - this to the change in your effective final drive ratio.

Due to this endeavour to keep the overall rolling diameter of the wheel the recommended OEM sizes. In all cases avoid going above 16 inches.
