Handling/Suspension upgrades

Improving the handling for many people first priority in your Murano tuning project.

Good suspension tweaks that greatly improve handling for the Murano include a couple of degrees negative camber and 1-1.5 degrees of toe in or out on the front wheels. Toe in for stability, or Toe out to improve cornering. It would also pay to improve the brakes, by adding larger discs and or higher friction pads..

We suggest that you fit modified suspension and lower the car by 28mm - 41 mm. Larger drops require arch work - especially on models already equipped with uprated suspension.

Our aim in Murano engine tuning should be to increase peak power and Torque at the top end.

With our recommended mods you can change your Murano into a fun car, beating larger cars on the track.

Smaller engines do not provide much of a return in terms of power so start with a bigger engine. Engine swaps are a good option if you have a small engine size.

Engine Tuning.

These are the performance kits are usually carried out by our members, decide how far you want to push your car before you begin.

Getting the right performance upgrade kits for your planned usage of the car is a time and money saver. Stage 3 (competition) mods just don't work well on the road difficult in stop start traffic.

How to tune your car

  1. Improve the handling

Focus on Suspension improvements, such as coilovers and make sure the bushings are in good order and that the alignment is correct. Then focus on improving the brakes, with a big disk brake conversion kit and fast road brake pads.

  2. Remove restrictions

Focus on the intake and exhaust with filters being the common point of restriction in a tuned car. Intercoolers may also become restrictive on turbo engines so this may also need to be uprated.

  3. Burn more fuel & air

Increase the fuelling so it matches the air coming into the engine. The ratio is important so you need to improve the fuel pump and injectors, so the head mods, big valve conversions, fast road camshafts and forced induction upgrades extra supply of air is adequately met.

  4. Test and replace any weak parts

Weak areas are commonly the clutch, the turbocharger and pistons and crankshaft in a highly tuned engine. Makes sure these components will cope with your power aspirations.

  5. The Tune or Remap

A cars ECU controls the fuel, timing, spark and even the turbo in some cases, so to fully extract your gains you should remap the car last and this will fully release the power. Some cars are easy to map, and others require piggyback ECU's or aftermarket ECU's but this is the most vital step of your tuning project.

Modifying to Stage 1:

Remap, Lighter flywheel, Alloy wheels, Panel air filter, Sports exhaust, Suspension upgrade (drop 28mm - 41 mm.).

Modifying to Stage 2:

Power/Sport clutch, fuel pump upgrades, Fast road cam, high flow fuel injector, Ported and polished head.

Modifying to Stage 3:

Competition cam, Internal engine upgrades (pistons/head/valves), Adding or upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger), Sports gearbox, Engine balancing.

Your aims when tuning should be a wide torque curve. You want to avoid sending all the power to be at the top end of the rev range unless you are creating a motor sport car.

In this article we shall give an overview and introduction to the best mods for your car, but we'd encourage you to spend some time on the site looking into the details of each type of performance upgrade. One of the biggest mechanical modifications you can do on your NASP engine is to fit a fast road cam .

It maximises the intake and exhaust durations and increases the power if done right. Ideally you'd add other mods and finish up with a performance chip. We'd also caution you not to go with a motor sport cam as this upsets the engines idling and general town driving characteristics.

Don't forget to pay attention to the fuelling when you are increasing the power - it makes the car more thirsty.

Using higher octane fuel is another option if you find you are suffering from detonation or premature ignition on your Nissan project after fitting other sports mods. Improved injectors will enable you to supply sufficient fuel to the engine.

If you've uprated your fuelling with bigger injectors you will also need to get a bigger fuel pump to supply it.

Intake and Exhaust Tuning.

The next area for modification is the intake and exhaust.  Please note that WE DO NOT FEEL YOU GET POWER GAINS FROM INDUCTION KITS, unless you have tuned your car massively and are finding that the standard air intake has become a restriction.

Induction kits can work well on turbo engines and larger engines (if supplied with a suitable cold air feed or air box), generally though we'd just recommend for Murano engines you should just fit a performance panel air filter preferably made from cotton.

Sports exhausts generally help improve air flow from the engine but avoid an exhaust that is too large or you may end up will reduce the flow rate. Stick to 1.5 to 2.5 inches for best results.

Head work including a polish and port and 3 or 5 angle valve job will really help to release the potential of the engine. Your clutch can fail if it starts to suffer and the standard clutches are only ever good for power gains of up to 46%. Fit a performance clutch to avoid power loss through the transmission. The best mods we recommend for your Murano are remaps, sports camshafts and induction improvements.

Turbo engines are just crying out to be flashed. You will see big power gains on most modern turbo charged cars including diesels making a remap one of the most cost effective and big modifications for your money.

We've also seen some tuners experimenting with twincharging conversions and making some seriously high power figures.

The most phenomenal power gains for NASP engines usually involve the addition of forced induction. Turbos are often harder to add than a supercharger. Turbos increase power in exponential proportion to rising engine speed and this can make mapping difficult.

The nice proportional boost and rpm characteristics of the supercharger make them simpler to map. To cope with forced induction you will usually need to decrease the compression ratio of the engine .

Alloy wheel upgrades.

The benefits of alloys include reducing your unsprung weight and more efficient brake cooling.

If you are serious about performance then you will need to carefully choose your tires - ideally with a directional tread pattern tire.

The drawback to large alloy wheels on your Murano is that you're changing your effective final drive ratio so this will have a negative effect on performance and acceleration.

For this reason we would advise sticking to a maximum wheel size of 18 inches, although we know some of our members have installed larger rims with no problems.
